Virtual reality technology has encouraged variations in teaching and learning and provided more possibilities for experiential learning as a new medium in modern education (Niu et al., 2021). Implementing VR in education can improve learning by giving students engaging and interactive learning experiences that might not be accessible with traditional teaching methods, as learning outcomes are more likely to be better when students are motivated and engaged. However, given the fact that VR is an effective teaching tool, students who lacked programming knowledge found projects difficult and reported spending more time learning how to use VR than using it. The lack of instructions for incorporating VR into classes is a significant challenge for educators (Appel et al., 2021).
Experiencing VR in tutorial week 6
CoSpaces Edu is an interactive platform that enables students to create and program 3D creations using block-based coding and explore them in VR from any device. With a subscription of $50 per year and $7.5 for every additional seat, teachers can create classes, assign tasks, and provide feedback. This platform supports cross-curricular learning, promotes collaboration, and enhances students' communication skills, as it allows students to work together and share their VR content. To use it in classrooms, students can create their own imagined world based on content to review or enhance the learning about certain concepts. Additionally, students could be asked to create a world with a variety of living things based on similarities and differences in structural features, to achieve the outcome SC4-14LW in stage 4 science learning about the Living world (984 | NSW Education Standards, n.d.). Through the use of this platform, students' creativity will be fostered through the creation of virtual worlds and games, which can be assisted by Google Cardboard or VR goggles such as the MERGE Goggles to view in VR (Matteson, 2019).
However, there are limitations to using this technology. Including the cost of subscription and limited content available on the platform. While CoSpaces Edu provides users with the tools to create their own VR content, there is a limited amount of content available within the platform, which can narrow the scope of projects that students can create.
